HIV / AIDS Community Nursing Service

This is a nurse-led specialist service providing clinical assessments,  screening, interventions, education and support to patients and carers living with HIV/AIDS.  The service facilitates patient discharges into the community with the appropriate care packages within Consultant-led clinics.

There is support and confirmatory screening of pregnant women who are suspected of having contracted HIV/AIDS.  The service also offers HIV/AIDS screening for children of HIV/AIDS infected women.

The service provides an informal and limited out-of-hours service covering aspects of HIV/AIDS.  The service has direct mobile telephone access for  Wolverhampton’s patients who require clinical assistance, advice or support.

The service works closely with addiction services, providing Hepatitis screening as well as advice and support for those who have contracted Hepatitis.

The service offers targeted health promotion programmes to those living within the Borough including the Black Barber's Shop Scheme and Men's Room projects.  Services within these include STI screening, condom distribution and advice and support, psychosexual and impotence assessment and referral.

The service works in close collaboration with the Terrence Higgins Trust to provide HIV/AIDS screening and advice and support as well as HIV/AIDS related education and training on a network basis to healthcare professionals within Wolverhampton
The Specialists Nurses are Lecturer Practitioners at Wolverhampton University and have co-run a level 3 Module ‘Care and Management of People with HIV/AIDS’ since 2001.
