New Cross Hospital saw almost 100,000patients in 2010/11 in
its Accident and Emergency Department. Some patients are treated in
the Department, some need to come into hospital and others return
for further treatment with a consultant at the hospital or with
their GP.
With advances in diagnostic testing, medicines and
technology, far more people can now be treated in their homes. This
means that in the Accident and Emergency Department we can now
carry out more tests and care before a patient is admitted and we
are able to safely discharge more patients for community care or
self care.
The Department of Health has decided that it will
change the way we report on our performance in the Accident and
Emergency Department to make sure that what we report gives a
better picture of the patient experience as well as the quality of
care. The new indicators will apply to all hospitals in the
country.
A key indicator of whether we have achieved this
will be the experience reported by patients (one of the new
metrics).
The information on the quality of clinical care
in Accident and Emergency will be available on our website and
in departments throughout the hospital so that everyone can see how
the Trust is performing.
This is a set of clinical quality indicators which
provide a broader picture of the impact of the care we deliver and
we welcome any feedback on their content and presentation.
