Emergency Services

The Accident & Emergency Service is intended for patients who have received a serious injury, sudden severe Illness or a medical emergency.

If you present with any of the following you will not be seen and will be advised to go to your GP or your local Walk In Centre.

You do not need hospital treatment for:

  • Minor cuts
  • Bruises
  • Insect bites
  • Minor scalds
  • Coughs
  • Colds
  • Headache & dizziness
  • Back pain
  • Stomach ache
  • Indigestion
  • Constipation
  • Vomiting & diarrhoea
  • Minor infections & sore throats
  • Eye problems such as conjunctivitis and styes which are none urgent
  • Skin complaints including rashes, minor allergic reactions
  • Scabies
  • Head lice & nappy rash
  • Urinary infections & thrush
  • Pregnancy testing
  • ‘Morning after’ – emergency contraception pill
  • Toothache

If you are unsure whether a health problem is an emergency needing A&E treatment then call your GP, or attend your local walk in centre or call NHS Direct 0845 46 47.
