Exercise, Walking and Keeping Fit

Physical activity has a positive impact on your health and wellbeing. People who are physically active reduce their risk of developing major chronic diseases, including coronary heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes, by up to 50%, and their risk of premature death by 20 - 30%.
(Taken from At least five a week: A Report from the Chief Medical Officer. Department of Health, April 2004).

The Department of Health recommends that, for general health, adults should be engaged in at least thirty minutes of moderate intensity activity on five or more days each week. For children, the recommended level is at least sixty minutes each day, and this should include activities to improve strength and flexibility.  More information on the health benefits of physical activity can be found in the Department of Health publication ‘At least five a week: Evidence of the impact of physical activity and its relationship to health’
